How and what does the hidden month tool do?

Im reading there is a 'hidden month tool'. What is this for and what are the benefits.

In the "finds" tab of your statistics, there is a section entitled "Finds by hidden month". So say you find a cache that was hidden in March 2006, you would then get 1 in that box. Some people like to try to fill as many gaps as they can - this tool is used to find caches hidden in those months.

The hidden month just another statistic that you may or may not care about. As Optimist on the run says in his answer, it is a tool to help you filter caches that will help you fill that table in your statistics. There is also one for hidden dates which does not factor the year in. The hidden month tool does take both year and month into account.

You should, however, select Optimist on the run as best answer. He was first and also correct :)
