As far as I know on gc.com usernames are not case sensitive (e.g. when user "Abcd" exists you can not register a new user "abcd", "ABCD", "aBcD", ....)

Apparently the case is registered but only used for displaying purposes.

So why do I need to know the exact case when searching for a user on Project-GC?

Back in the days we tried to solve it better. But with all different languages and alphabets it didn't work very well. It's super easy for A-Z. But start putting accents and stuff on the characters and it's not so easy anymore. It might even be different in different languages.

From a more technical perspective we have never managed to make our SQL Collations HQs collations, which caused issues.

For example, these two are (obviously) two different users. Though the names are almost identical:

  1. https://www.geocaching.com/p/?u=elis
  2. https://www.geocaching.com/p/?u=EL%C4%B0S
We would however also like to be able to handle the casing better, so maybe in the far away future.

I wished at least for plain aA-zZ (covering - I guess - 98%) it would be super helpfull.
